Frequently Asked Questions about Botox Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers
What is Botox Cosmetic?
Botox® is a brand name for Botulinum toxin, a protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It works by blocking nerve impulses, thus “paralyzing” targeted muscles. Botox has been approved for use by the FDA for over 17 years and has been widely studied. It was first used in by ophthalmologists to treat certain medical conditions, such as uncontrollable facial and eyelid spasms as well as disorders of the eye muscles. Interestingly, it was the husband and wife team of an ophthalmologist and a dermatologist who first recognized the positive effect of Botulinum toxin on fine lines and wrinkles while using the product to treat facial and eyelid spasms in their patients. Since that time, the product has become the most popular physician administered cosmetic treatment.
How does Botox® work to decrease fine lines and wrinkles?
The paralyzing effect of the toxin can reduce frown lines caused by the repetitive movement of certain facial muscles. A physician uses a very fine needle to inject a tiny amount of Botox® into the affected area temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause lines. This creates a smoother appearance, but generally does not affect facial expression.
What are dermal fillers and how do they work?
Juvederm™ like other dermal fillers is smooth injectable gel filler that is eased under the skin to instantly smooth out deeper wrinkles or folds. It works especially well for those folds that look like “parentheses” along the sides of your nose and mouth. Juvederm is made up of hyaluronic acid, a natural complex sugar found in all living cells. Juvederm is different from other dermal fillers because of “hylacross technology” in which there is a high degree of cross-linking of the material which lends to its smoother gel-like consistency and longer duration of action.
How long do Botox® and Juvederm last?
It takes a few days for any changes with Botox® to become noticeable. The positive effects of the Botox® injections last from three to six months. Juvederm smooth dermal filler can last up to one year.
Are these products safe?
Botox® Cosmetic and Juvederm™ dermal fillers are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), meaning that clinical data on their safety and efficacy were reviewed prior to their approval. Botox® is approved for the treatment of over 20 different conditions in more than 75 countries worldwide and has been approved in the US for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. The same formulation received FDA approval as Botox® Cosmetic in 2002 for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines in 2002.
Who should perform Botulinum Toxin and dermal filler treatments?
These treatments are serious medical procedures and should be performed in a medical setting by someone who is licensed to practice medicine. Although, several types of physicians perform these treatments, an Eye M.D. (ophthalmologist) is a good choice because he or she is most familiar with the anatomy and function of the areas surrounding the eyes. Also, those licensed to practice medicine can best advise you of the risks of the procedures and evaluate whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedures.
